SUMMARY:Live Freeways goes Bike Camping
CONTACT:Bureau of John Russell
DESCRIPTION:6/12 ride postponed one week to 6/19\nYou’ve heard of the Dead
Freeways Ride exploring the Portland freeways we’ve never built or
removed entirely\, but what about all the freeways that did get built? Did
you know that the majority of Portland area freeways are legally open to
bikes and non-motorized vehicles? Did you know that Oregon State Parks
were originally developed as a branch of the Oregon State Highway
Department thanks to the same declaration that preserved public ownership
of our Pacific beaches?\n\nWith over 50\,000 miles of cycling experience\,
and thousands of miles of unsupported bike touring\, your ride leader
will show everyone the ropes of bike touring and camping\, so please come
prepared with hammocks\, tents\, sleeping bags\, and anything else you
need for an enjoyable night outdoors in Oregon's scenic French Prairie.
There will be an attempt to provide a support vehicle to carry gear for
those with limited carrying capacity. Please bring approximately $20 to
cover camping fees\, MAX fare\, and food\, but no one will be turned away
due to lack of funds.\n\nMeet at 11\, ride at 11:30 am. We’ll be starting
in SE Portland near OMSI\, with a pit stop at the south end of the Orange
Line for anyone arriving by MAX. From there\, we'll make our way to I-205
in West Linn via Oregon City. For the main portion of the ride\, we'll
travel on 14 miles of smooth\, W I D E shoulders through some of the most
scenic stretches of freeway in the Portland metro area to cross the
Willamette River via the Boone Bridge. To end the afternoon\, we'll make
camp at Champoeg State Park\, at the northern end of the Willamette Valley
Scenic Bikeway\, for a total of under 30 miles on Saturday. On Sunday\,
we will break camp and meander approximately 30 miles back to the MAX Blue
line in Hillsboro via Newberg with some of the best scenery of rural
Yamhill and Washington Counties.\n\nIn total\, the ride will be an
approximately 65 miles long over two <35-mile days. While the route does
not loop\, we will connect to the MAX on each end\, so please bring
appropriate fare unless you want to bike the whole way home.\n\nPlease
check Facebook for the most updated ride information. Don’t hesitate to
contact the Bureau of John Russell with any questions you may have.\nMeet
at 11 am\, ride at 11:30 am\, with a stop at the end of the Orange Line at
  12:34 pm.\nEnds at Champoeg State Park\, Hillsboro
