SUMMARY:CANCELLED: Live Freeways goes Wild!
CONTACT:Bureau of John Russell
DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED to 7/09 due to flooding.\nYou’ve heard of the Dead
Freeways Ride exploring the Portland freeways we’ve never built or
removed entirely\, but what about all the freeways that did get built? Did
you know that the majority of Portland and Vancouver area freeways are
legally open to bikes and non-motorized vehicles? Much like State DOTs
during the freeway building era of the 20th Century\, the US Army Corps of
Engineers constructed many levees for “flood protection” that negatively
impacted natural flood plains and wildlife migration patterns around them.
Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge is one local example where
levees have recently been removed to restore these important
wetlands.\n\nMeet at 11\, ride after the 11:33 am Red Line MAX train.
We’ll be starting in Northeast Portland at the Parkrose/Sumner Transit
Center and ride on freeway shoulders to visit the newly reopened
Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge east of Washougal\, Washington\,
with a pit stop for food and drinks on the way back. Ride is not a loop\,
but easy transit connections make for route options of 26\, 33\, or 40
miles.\n\nPlease check Facebook for the most updated ride details and
links to additional information.\nDon’t hesitate to contact the Bureau of
John Russell with any questions you may have.\nMeet at 11\, ride after the
11:33 am Red Line MAX train.\nEnds at Fishers Landing
