SUMMARY:Hot Day Care Brigade 🌞🌡️🧃
CONTACT:Revolutionary Bicycle Club
DESCRIPTION:We ride if temps hit 93\nClimate chaos is here\, and heat
kills! \n\nLet's take a slow ride around SE to deliver cold drinks and
care to anyone we encounter who needs a cooldown. We know that people
living or working outside are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke\, and
wildlife and outdoor pets can suffer too.\n\nWe'll only ride if the temps
are in the mid nineties or above. We'll repeat this ride on other days as
needed\, so check the calendar on any hot day to see if it's happening.
\n\nThis will be a casual ride with no definitive route and may split into
groups if a lot of people show up. We may end the ride by stopping
somewhere for a cold treat or drink\, plunging in a river\, merging with
another ride\, or just heading home. You decide!\n\nWHAT YOU CAN BRING:
cold or frozen bottled drinks\, water (jugs or bottles)\, snacks (salty
 snacks provide electrolytes)\, cooling packs\, lightweight towels/bandanas
(for soaking in water)\, handheld fans\, first aid supplies/gloves\, and
clean reusable water bottles. We'll swing by Safeway as the start of the
ride to pick up any extra supplies we need\, so don't sweat it if you
don't have time to grab supplies before coming to the ride.\n\nSOME THINGS
TO KNOW ABOUT HEATSTROKE: 🥵🥵🥵\n\nPublic health officials usually
report a spike in heat-related deaths and illnesses whenever temps go into
the mid nineties and above. \n\nHeatstroke is a medical emergency and
should always be taken seriously. Signs of heatstroke include inability to
  speak/slurred speech\, disorientation\, extreme lethargy\, and fainting.
In animals\, fast panting and/or abnormally sluggish behavior (for
example\, a wild animal that does not run away when you approach) may
indicate heat illness.\n\n🆘🧍🏾‍♀️For humans\, when heatstroke is
identified you should call 911 first and then move the person out of the
sun\, remove excess layers of clothing\, and start cooling them by dousing
in water\, fanning\, and applying cold packs. On a hot day\, do NOT
assume that someone who is lying down outside is just sleeping or drunk–
check to make sure that they are okay! Do not offer drinks to anyone who
is having trouble talking\, as liquid may be a choking hazard. If you're
not sure whether you're looking at heatstroke or an overdose\, it's not a
bad idea to treat it like both and give Narcan if you have
it.\n\n🐿️🐦‍⬛For furred/feathers animals\, you can also wet and fan them
but do *not* use ice water as this can cause constriction of blood vessels
and further trap heat. Handle wildlife as little as possible while
relocating to a cooler place\, then seek help from a certified wildlife
rescuer or emergency vet. \n\n🌳🌲Don't forget about trees! Newly planted
trees particularly suffer during heat waves\, and trees planted at new
developments\, schools\, and commercial complexes may not have someone
checking in on them. The best way to water a tree is with a very slow drip
system: add a pinprick hole to the cap of a gallon jug\, fill up with
water\, then bury the top of the jug in soil (ideally directly beneath the
far edge of the tree's canopy\, where rain would naturally fall) to
slowly drain. Young trees may need 20 gallons per week.\n\nHappy climate
change summer! 🫠\nMeet at 5\, roll at 5:15\, catch us at Hawthorne
Safeway if you miss roll time\nhttps://shift2bikes.org/calendar/event-
