End location: Portland Mercado
The April monthly ride for the SE chapter of BikeLoud PDX will cover some new bike routes coming to southeast Portland later this year. This ride will be a mellow, conversation-paced ride about five miles long on calm streets. BikeLoud* rides are free and membership is not required to join rides. The ride will be a near loop, ending just a few blocks from the Mount Scott Park start location. The end spot is the Portland Mercado food court, where we can enjoy some cycling comaraderie after the ride. The title of this ride comes from a project called the Lower SE Rising Area Plan. This plan being executed by the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS) covers the area of Portland to the south of SE Foster Road out to SE 92nd Ave. The plan includes bike network improvements, local street upgrades, and a potential bus network redesign. The soon-to-be-completed bike improvements we will ride along are the 60s and 70s greenways, both slated for construction in 2023. Greenways are quiet, slow streets that prioritize people walking, bicycling, and rolling. The 60s Greenway is 5.5 miles long and will connect the Springwater Corridor with Mt. Tabor. We will ride the lower 3 miles of this greenway. The 70s Greenway will eventually extend all the way up to Cully Park, a distance of about 8.5 miles. We will ride just the lower portion of this greenway, combining it with the Springwater Connector Greenway which was completed a couple years ago. In addition to the greenways we will also be visiting Arleta Triangle Square, a public street plaza adjacent to Mount Scott Park that was completed last year. This plaza is noteworthy for both its traffic calming effects and its colorful pavement shown in the picture for this ride. We hope you come out to join! If you have any questions on this ride, please message the ride leader through the Instagram link below. * About BikeLoud PDX: From social rides to policy rides, BikeLoud PDX hosts many rides throughout the year to encourage people to meet each other, bike more, learn, and have fun.
