Remember that scene at the start of the movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial where E.T. is so enchanted by the magical forest he is exploring that he misses his ride home? Later on, E.T. returns to the forest in the basket of Elliott’s bicycle to “phone home” using his ingenious communicator made from various household items. Well, Portland has a similar magical forest, and on the anniversary of the movie’s release we are having a group ride there. So decorate your bike with any E.T. memorabilia you may have and join us for a 3.5 mile ride to the hidden entrance into the magical forest. The route will be pretty flat with a one-block hill, and it is entirely paved, so any bike will do. No need for those bike jumping skills Elliott and his buddies demonstrated in the movie! We will simply walk our bikes on a path a short distance into the forest. Once there, maps will be provided to everyone to explore the forest on foot (there’s a place to lock up bikes). The forest is quite large and has a few tie-ins to the movie. And it has some other cool stuff not related to the movie. The location of all of these will be indicated on the map. And at the forest we will pass out packaged treats to all who attend. You can probably guess what those will be! And there's a special E.T. prize hidden at the entrance to the forest. Bring your cell phone or GPS handheld along as the map coordinates of that prize will be given to go on a geocache-style treasure hunt. This ride is a BikeLoud PDX affiliated event, and the family friendly 3.5 mile route will mostly be on the calm streets of the Neighborhood Greenway network, with some brand-new bike infrastructure included. The end location is fairly close to a Portland MAX station. If you have any questions on the ride, contact the organizer at the Instagram link below. The magical forest is a fun place to explore both now and in the future, so we hope to see you on the ride!
