Meet at 6:30, Ride at 6:45. Dance party starts at about 8:30.
End location: Alberta Park or Woodlawn Park
Ian K. Curtis is turning 67 and it's time to celebrate this dear, sweet, complex soul who fronted Joy Division. He deserved much better medical care, mental health care and, frankly, better friends. We get to be those friends and give him--and all the tender weirdos in our lives--the care, affirmation, and celebration they deserve! So, bring your tortured souls, your sweet and sad friends, your sweet and sad self, your rage and tension, and get weird. Swing those elbows like Ian and celebrate staying alive thus far in a cruel world. We'll go on a mellow bike ride around NE Portland listening to Joy Division (maybe a little Warsaw). Then we'll end up at a park for an amazing post-punk dance party brought to you by THE PASTOR (@thechurchofdance). There will be post-punk/new wave/no wave/indie hits that never would have been possible without Joy Division's delightfully disruptive Unknown Pleasures. Come! Dance! Cry! Wiggle and writhe! Honor those who left us too soon! Be better to those you love! Check in on your friends! End suicide stigma! And always: Dance dance dance dance dance to the radio. If your body isn't feeling up for a bike ride, feel free to show up just for the dance party!
