Oregon passed the "Idaho Stop Law" in 2019, meaning that people riding bicycles can roll slowly though a stop sign, or a red light, if there is no conflicting traffic. This is a boon to actually getting somewhere on a bike without undo delay. Many people helped get this legislation passed, but instrumental were * Jason Meggs, who advocated and researched it from 1998 to 2015, and * Bjorn Warloe, of Portland, who worked hard to get it passed in Oregon. Ladd Circle police stop sign stings were Bjorn's main impetus to get the law passed. And the police busting of Portland Critical Mass rides around stop sign laws in the late 1990s were Jason's impetus to begin his work. So both the national and state efforts to pass this legislation have Portland origins. http://www.monkeychicken.com/fwar.htm http://www.monkeychicken.com/cmh.htm https://bikeportland.org/2019/01/29/ppb-steps-up-patrols-releases-video-of-bicycle-riders-failing-to-stop-at-infamous-ladd-circle-stop-sign-294743 Jason is visiting Portland on this day, so we will ride with both Bjorn and Jason, and they can tell us about their long term efforts to get this legislation passed. Other ride themes -- * Long Haul Advocacy. What if your advocacy project will take 5, 10 or 20 years so come to fruition? How do you stick with it? * Alternative gender pronouns. Jason prefers and proposes a Na/Nom/Ahz set of gender-indifferent pronouns https://meggsreport.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/gender-neutral-pronouns-please/ We'll chat a bit at Ladd Circle, roll around SE and practice safe, legal passage of stop signs and traffic signals, then meet for food and drinks 1:00. Both Jason and Bjorn will each give a 10 minute summary of their advocacy efforts. https://cal.streetsblog.org/2022/05/06/nhtsa-releases-the-facts-on-bicycle-stop-as-yield-laws-they-increase-safety https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idaho_stop
