On the final day of another fantastic Pedalpalooza Bike Summer, join us in Laurelhurst Park on the evening of Thursday August 31st to celebrate the recent curtailment of notable freeway expansion projects (I-5 Rose Quarter & I-205), which would have further clogged our city with traffic, endangered cyclists/pedestrians and polluted our planet. But first, let's enjoy a leisurely ride, entirely on a few of Portland's Neighborhood Greenways! Neighborhood Greenways are quieter streets in Portland where cyclists and pedestrians are prioritized with much fewer cars at lower speeds and increased pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, so you can expect this mostly-flat, 5-mile loop-ride to be less stress and more fun! Convene at the north shore of Firwood Lake in Laurelhurst Park at 4:15 PM and ride at 4:45 PM. The ride ends at Picnic Area A in the SW corner of Laurelhurst Park at 5:30 PM, where Sunrise PDX and No More Freeways are co-hosting a celebration of this important victory in the fight against car-dependency and the climate crisis (and celebrating NMF's 6th birthday!). Enjoy birthday cake & light refreshments, hear from local leaders and activists on the effort to promote safe, equitable and low-carbon transportation, and learn how you can get involved! Sunrise PDX is our local hub of a youth-led (35 & under) nationwide climate justice activism organization. We are a movement of young people working to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. We are fighting for a Green New Deal at the local, state, and federal levels that addresses injustice and inequity while also fighting the climate crisis. Our upcoming campaign is transportation-focused and we would love to hear from you about issues you face around transportation! No More Freeways was founded in 2017 in response to the passage of legislation funding massive freeway expansions around the Portland Metro region. We are an all-volunteer, community-funded 501c(3) organization working to oppose freeway expansions within Portland’s urban growth boundary. Our work has been featured in Willamette Week, the Oregonian, CityLab, VICE, and the New York Times.
