Ride is a loop
With the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy coming back to theaters in early June, this bike ride is a celebration of that three-day event, getting its name from the second movie in the series. As stand-ins for the towers in the movies we are using the two towers in the West Hills that overlook downtown Portland. And like the hobbits Frodo and Sam in the movies, it will be somewhat challenging getting to our end goal. The route up to the towers is the least-steep one possible, and a designated bike route, but it still involves 900 feet of elevation gain to get to the first tower on Council Crest. That tower on Council Crest is the former KPTV transmitter, and from there it is a one mile ride to the KGON Tower at about the same elevation. The KGON Tower is also called the Stonehenge Tower and is the tallest free-standing structure between San Francisco and Seattle. These two towers have some interesting history that will be covered on the ride. Given the challenging climb on this ride, it is not specifically a costume event, but if so inclined feel free to come dressed as your favorite LOTR character. We will regroup as needed on the ride up the hill. After visiting the Stonehenge Tower we will make another stop at an overlook that provides a sweeping view extending from downtown Portland to Mount Hood. From there the ride returns to the start location at Lovejoy Fountain Park. Total ride distance is eight miles. Hope to see you on the ride! Here is information on each of the three movies, which will be shown at select theaters in Portland on the three afternoons and evenings prior to this ride: June 8 - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring June 9 - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers June 10 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Check local listings for times and tickets. These are the extended versions of the movies, so they will be longer than the original theatrical releases from over twenty years ago.
