Ride bikes together with Kidical Mass PDX from NE Portland to the East Portland Sunday Parkways open streets event. Sunday Parkways provides a car-free open streets celebration. But getting there from NE Portland is a little difficult. Ride together with us to make it fun! This is a slow ride, paced for kids on bikes and parents on cargo bikes. We’ll ride 2.6 miles from Rose City Park playground to Gateway Discovery Park, the start of Sunday Parkways route, where there will be food vendors, water and restrooms. We should arrive at about 12:35. After a break there from 12:35pm to 1:15pm for lunch, you can also join us if you want to ride the whole Sunday Parkways route together, 3.3 miles each way (6.6 total) with 2 stops on the way at Ventura Park and Lincoln Park. Then we can meet up together again at Gateway Discover Park at 3pm to ride back to Rose City Park (listed separately on the ride calendar at 3:30pm) While the first part of the ride is only 2.6 miles each way, if you do the whole loop it will be 11.5 miles. The first 1.5 miles is fairly flat and on low traffic streets with a bike lane, but then there is a 1/2 mile uphill section on the sidewalk of Halsey Street on the bridge over the freeway. This will be suitable for school-age bike riders who can pedal their own bike uphill in a straight line.. Kids should wear a helmet, be able to ride in a straight line without training wheels, start and stop, and follow instructions. Cargo bikes, tandems, trailers and tag-a-longs are great for younger or less confident kids, or in case kids get tired of pedaling. Adults without kids can also join the ride as corkers to help with traffic safety. We’ll ride together as a group, rain or shine, because kids are traffic too!
