. The weather is going to be dry on Thursday so grab your binoculars and come ride with us to check out WHITAKER PONDS NATURE PARK, a quiet gem hidden within a NE industrial park. As part of the Columbia Slough, it has two freshwater ponds, a black cottonwood forest, and a half-mile loop trail for walking and cycling. Envision riding along a well-groomed packed-gravel trail while hearing crickets & frogs, and catching glimpses of birds, ducks, geese, owls, egrets, eagles, turtles, reptiles, nutria and an occasional beaver. This could be a final opportunity to ride there for awhile because our Greenway route is closing soon while the 42nd Ave overpass is being redone. ***We've also been invited to stop in to the Community Garden at next property over, to hear the speakers at the Native American Youth Association Family Center's Un-Thanksgiving event. Because we won't take up car parking spaces, they offered for us to attend, even with registration full and closed. Thank you NAYA!*** ....................... UN-THANKSGIVING is also known as the National Day of Mourning, with annual events taking place across the United States on the same day as Thanksgiving. It is a day for acknowledging the history of colonization and its impact on Native communities. It is a time for reflection, remembrance, and solidarity with Indigenous peoples. ....................... Meet us at either Irving Park leaving at 9:30 a.m., or at Fernhill Park next to the splashpad by 9:45. We will ride together down the 42nd overpass towards Columbia Blvd, crossing at the light then riding along the sidewalk bike path to the Whitaker Ponds parking lot. We will ride straight through to the NAYA property first, needing to arrive by 10:15, to quickly get our bikes parked and be settled by 10:30 when the speakers are scheduled to begin. After their speakers are done, estimating about 20-30 minutes, our group will continue on to ride around the Whitaker Ponds area by heading back down the gravel trail we rode in on. After we soak in the nature, we’ll head back up the NE 42nd hill (the only major incline and the overpass scheduled to be closed soon), then ride to nearby Extracto Coffee Roasters. This coffee shop is donating 100% of their sales on November 28 to Native American causes. Riders can peel off towards home at any time, or ride BACK TO IRVING PARK with us.
