Memorial starts at 11am, bike ride follows the memorial and ghost bike installation
Ride is a loop
The bike community sadly lost one of our own in a bike crash earlier this year. Mike Sloan was riding on the 50s Greenway when he crashed while crossing SE Division Street. Witnesses report that Mike's bike began to wobble and then fall over when he rode into the intersection after waiting to get a green light. A memorial service will be held at the crash site, along with the permanent installation of a ghost bike. This is a bike that Mike rode and was recently being used as a trainer in his basement. Mike was a long-term member and active ride leader in the Portland Bicycle Club. As a highly experienced rider, he regularly went for 30+ mile rides around Portland. He was near the end of a 35-mile ride when the wreck occurred. Also a keen bicycle tourist, he had ridden (with his daughter) from San Diego, CA to St. Augustine, FL in just 30 days. After the ghost bike installation there will be a memorial bike ride to honor Mike. This will be a 37-mile ride along one of his favorite loop routes, but it will also include a shorter 5-mile loop for those who don't want to do the longer distance. The memorial and ghost bike installation will start at 11am at SE Division St & SE 52nd Ave, followed by the bike ride from that same location. Both the long and short rides will return there. We hope to see all who wish to honor Mike at this event and to hear remembrances of his life.
