Meet at 7:30, Ride at 8
10:30 PM
End location: Brooklyn Park, SE 10th Avenue, Portland, OR
Ride length: 8-15 miles
In 1981, four Brooklyn teenagers started a hardcore punk band called the Young Aborigines. They played their first show on bassist Adam Yauch's 17th birthday. A few years and a lineup change later, they'd reinvented themselves as a hip-hop trio — Mike D, Ad-Rock, and MCA — and dropped Licensed to Ill on Def Jam in 1986. It was the first rap album to top the Billboard 200. Over the next 25 years, the Beastie Boys made eight studio albums, founded their own label, opened for Madonna, organized Tibetan freedom concerts, directed their own videos under fake Swiss filmmaker pseudonyms, and earned a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. MCA died of cancer in May 2012. The band disbanded the same day. By then they'd sold 40 million records. Today would have been Adam Yauch's 62nd birthday. We're celebrating him — and the band that wouldn't have existed without him — with a ride from the start location all the way to Brooklyn Park, soundtracked by 3-3.5 hours of Beastie Boys deep cuts, hits, and everything in between. From the bratty 1986 debut to the genre-warping middle period to the late-career instrumental detours, we'll touch every era. No sleep till Brooklyn (Park). q The BIKESxBEATS sound trailer will be in tow with all the bass you can handle. Costumes and props strongly encouraged — orange Sabotage jumpsuits, fake mustaches, vintage Adidas, NY Yankees gear, lederhosen if you're feeling Nathanial Hörnblowér. Whatever says "Beastie Boys." We'll roll at a social pace with regroups so nobody gets dropped, plus a store stop midway for snacks and water. Bring lights — we'll be out past sundown. One thing to flag: if you flat or have a mechanical, we won't be able to hold the ride for repairs, so come with a plan to get yourself home if something goes sideways.
