Ride is a loop
Ride length: 3-8 miles
Come celebrate 50 years of biking across America! Although this ride loop is only 5.5 miles, we will be celebrating the historic 1976 BikeCentennial route that was 4,200 miles from the Oregon coast to Virginia… and honoring Trek Bicycle Corp’s 50th anniversary, with the Slabtown location hosting the ride start and DONUTS! We will be riding a portion of another route, the Lewis and Clark bicycle trail. This 3,131 mile route goes from Illinois to the Oregon coast, passing through Portland along the way. Our 5.5 mile route will stay in the NW district, passing several bicycle–related venues along the way, ending back at the Trek store around 1:45-2pm. History: During the summer of 1976, thousands of cyclists rode across the country, some going East, others going West. Guide books and detailed maps were published covering the entire route. Many Bike Inns were established across the country, so riders were seldom not more than 30 miles from accommodations whether at a campground, school, fire station, church or other venue. The BikeCentennial route continues to be used to the present day and is now called the Trans America Bicycle Trail, known as the 'TransAm’. You can find helpful route maps and other resources including a method to find others to ride with on the non-profit ADVENTURE CYCLING ASSOCIATION website. To search a free place to stay for touring cyclists, check out the WARM SHOWERS website. And with the TREK BICYCLE CORPORATION having its humble beginning in a red barn in Waterloo Wisconsin 50 years ago, we wanted to add them to honor their dedication to keeping us all cycling. Our local Slabtown store is not far from where the Lewis and Clark Trail resumes its trek to the Oregon coast. Come ride it with us!!! All bicycles, whether conventional or electric, are welcome to join! (Ride leader only speaker, please).
