Climate chaos is here, and heatstroke kills! With scorching temps becoming our new summer normal, it's time to get in the habit of watching out for each other during heat waves. Let's take a ride around SE with cold drinks and other cooling supplies in hand, delivering them to those who need them most. We'll also share some info on how to identify signs of heatstroke and what to do when you see it! We'll only ride if the temps are in the mid nineties or above. We'll repeat this ride on other days as needed, so check the calendar on any hot day to see if it's happening. WHAT TO BRING: cold or frozen bottled drinks, water, snacks (salty snacks provide electrolytes), cooling packs/compresses, lightweight towels/bandanas (for soaking in water), handheld fans, first aid supplies/gloves, and clean reusable water bottles. We'll swing by Safeway as the start of the ride to pick up any extra supplies we need, so don't sweat it if you don't have time to grab supplies before coming to the ride. SOME THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT HEATSTROKE: Public health official usually report a spike in heat-related deaths and illnesses whenever temps go into the mid nineties and above. People who live or work outdoors (this includes agriculture workers and construction workers) are especially susceptible to heat-related illness. Children and elderly are also much more vulnerable to it. Wildlife/pets suffer too! Heatstroke is a medical emergency and should always be taken seriously. Signs of heatstroke include inability to speak/slurred speech, disorientation, extreme lethargy, and fainting. In animals, fast panting and/or abnormally sluggish behavior (for example, a bird that does not fly away when you approach) may indicate heat illness. For humans, you should call 911 first and then move the person out of the sun, remove excess layers of clothing, and start cooling them by dousing in water, fanning, and applying cold packs. Do not offer drinks as it may be a choking hazard. For many animals, you can also wet and fan them but do *not* use ice water. Handle wildlife as little as possible while relocating to a cooler place.
